The New Rules of Strategic Digital Marketing

Glenn and Tom introduce a series of podcasts on the new rules of sales and marketing. Look for more podcasts coming soon on this topic and follow-up discussions on what this means for your Website. Some things never change in marketing… some things have changed.

The Fundamentals of Marketing That will Never Change

  • Trust and relationships in people that bring us value.
  • Communication that drives results.
  • Knowledge, responsiveness and accountability.
  • Fair pricing for the deliverable service or product.
  • Direct and in-direct competition.
  • Having fun with the message and your work.
  • A great product or service at the core of your company.
  • Hard work and no excuses!

The Internet is the biggest change to marketing since television and radio. In the past you would need to reach a million people, now you need to reach one person, one million times.

 Four New Rules of Marketing

  1. Customers Find You
  2. The Power of Simplicity
  3. Importance of the Product or Service
  4. The Marketing and Sales Bar has been Raised

Two things describe the new consumer:

  1. Really smart because of wide access to information.
  2. Really busy because of information overload.

Here is more on today’s new consumers:

  • They are users and readers, impatient and want convenience.
  • The scan and don’t like to read on a computer screen.
  • They will read on portable screens.
  • Looking for quick concrete, relevant and timely advice.
  • Most just read, some want to comment or ask a question.
  • Look for organized Websites with content standards.
  • A part of the self-service world.
  • People are more important then companies or brands to drive leads.
  • A smart consumer can see through the sizzle.
  • The importance of transparency.
  • The new consumer wants to trust you.
  • The new consumer is inundated with noise!
  • They are very skeptical of what they don’t know.
  • Loyalty is more important to minimize options.

The key action items from this podcast:

  • Keep listening for more on the new rules of marketing and sales.
  • Now is the time to understand your invisible customer and how they perceive you.
  • How can you simplify or focus on three things.
  • Always be improving your product and service.
  • Where are you going for the mass market, when there should be more of a focus?
  • The better you understand the new consumer, the better your marketing results.
